Information about hair butters...

Hair butter is fat extracted from seeds or kernels. It is solid at room temperature. The above picture is raw Shea butter at room temperature. Butter does melt for easy application and use. You can melt it simply by using heat (microwave, stove). Butters are often melted and whipped for easy application.

What are some types of hair butters?
  • Mango butter
  • Shea butter
  • Cocoa butter

What does a hair butter do?

A hair butter seals in moisture on wet or dry hair. It contains minerals and vitamins such as vitamin A and E. In addition it contains essential fatty acids. It is said to give moisture to dry or damaged hair. It protects against weather damaged hair and repairs dry and brittle hair. It also restores luster to dull hair. In addition, it is quickly absorbed into the scalp to hydrate without clogging pores on your scalp

What does a hair oil do?

Oil seals in moisture and nourishes hair. It is used best on hair that has already been moisturized. There are many different kinds ranging from ones that promote scalp health to ones that promote hair growth. Oils  contain natural minerals extracts that hydrate, condition and protect hair.

What about a mixture of the two?

I think this is the best way to moisturize your hair. You get the smoothness of the butter and the shine from the oil. There are so many amazing properties to both! Why not combine them?

What do I use?
I use both combined! I use my own mixture of Shea butter, safflower oil and jojoba oil. I plan to keep adding different essential oils to the mix as I go. I like to do this because I am getting the best of both worlds. In my experience, hair butter helps to stretch my hair and elongate my curls. In addition it makes my hair cuticle much smoother!

So whether its a butter or an oil, keep your hair healthy, moisturized and nourished!
