Hair Tip # 51: Little Things That Could Be Causing Breakage

Glasses

Whether they are prescription glasses for eyesight,  for fashion wear or just to shade your eyes from the sun, these babies are a double edged sword. They can cause breakage right at your temples if you constantly thrust them on and off without paying attention.

Solution? Smooth the hair at  your temples to be sure it is out of the way, and then slide them on gently!

High Buns

Great style for throwing your hair up or opting for something elegant. But beware that you don't use a brush to smooth the back of your hair into the ponytail. Also, be careful not to put it too tight! You will cause breakage for sure!

Solution? Smooth up the ponytail with your hands gently. For a smooth look use a pomade, wax or gel.

Low Buns

Easy style, classy and timeless. But although they may be loose on the top, they can pull on the back of your hair and cause breakage. That is the last thing you want.

Solution? Ease up on how tight you do your low bun. You can use gel to give the illusion that it is secure and sleek without the extra tension.

Scarves
We all love them! They are cute, accessorize outfits and provide a pop of color to an otherwise drab outfit. However, they can cause breakage when they rub on the back of you hair.

Solution? Wear your hair up and off of your neck if you plan to wear a scarf!

Winter Coats

Fun for some (*ahem* those of us in So Cal), and necessary for others. If you aren't careful, the back of your jacket can tug on, tangle, dry out and break off your hair.

Solution? Wear your hair up and out of the way when wearing a winter coat!

Hair Accessories

We love them, and they love us, right? There's nothing like a cute clip, chopstick, headband or flower. But sadly, it can easily rip our hair, cause tension and breakage.

Solution? Assess the accessory before you buy it. Is it something that will tug on your hair? Are there parts of it that will pull it out? If so, step away! For clips, bows and flowers, put them in with a bobby pin to avoid letting those harsh metal clips rip out hair.

Are there other things you have noticed that can cause breakage? What are they and what do you do to prevent it?
