Perspectives from Persons #5: Anali Villasenor

Everyone meet my Mexican adopted daughter/kindred, Anali! Anali is a beautiful firecracker who loves God and this truth. She is someone who is an encouragement and great blessing in my life. She is surrounded by many naturalista's so I thought it would be more than fitting than to ask her what she thinks about it all.

1. Do you think that God is not only concerned about us having uncut hair, but also about the overall health of our hair? Many women think that as long as their hair appears "long" in length and that they haven't cut it that it is okay. But they cause horrid breakage from using constant heat, harmful products, etc. What do you think about this?

definitely think that God is concerned with the health of our hair and our overall health. Like in 1 Corinthians 6:19 says , our body is he temple of the Holy Ghost which abides in us. So by taking care of ourselves we are taking care of that mighty power that we hold within us. We don't belong to ourselves, we belong to Christ, so if God let you borrow something or use something, wouldn't you want to take good care of it? Plus, if people are just looking at the length of the hair, they are missing the whole point. Our hair is our glory! It's  something to be proud of, so why shouldn't you take care of it? There was a time I didn't really take care of my hair much, I would scrunch it and put  lot of stuff in it. Until it started breaking off. We only have one set of hair, and it's with me forever so I'm going to take care of it. That's how I see it.

2. You have several friends with natural hair. What do you think about them wearing their hair natural as opposed to constantly straightening it, or even chemically straightening it?

I applaud them! I think that in Pentecost, women know how to do hair like professionals, and I understand how intimidating It may be for somebody of color to step out and wear their hair natural in the midst of all the beautiful hairdo's . As far as straightened hair, I don't personally have anything against that, unless they do it ALL THE TIME, because it's like they are being something they are not and it damages their hair. But I think it makes somebody especially courageous when they step out with their hair in their natural state.

Also referring to the fact that Brendan told you that you were beautiful when you wore your hair natural and had no make up on, I think that women should allow themselves to be loved just they way they really are -  natural. Women in the world often time don't allow themselves to be even seen all natural.

3. What is your take on uncut hair? Why do you think it is essential and necessary for a woman to have uncut hair?

Oh yes! I know the scripture is there, but aside from scriptural reference, I truly believe it, I feel it.It's a strong conviction, I actually had that conviction before I even made up my mind fully to live for God. I remember the last time I cut my hair, I was 14 and they messed up SO bad! I cried, and I told myself that was the last time I would cut my glory. It's kind of like how our modest dress sets us apart from the world, our hair is the same. I always get attention when I wear my hair down or in a pony tail, it opens a door for conversation, a door to witness. If my hair does that, imagine what YOUR natural hair could do?

4. If you were to offer words of encouragement to women of color who have self esteem issues with their hair, what would you tell them?

I'm sure it is a scary, uneasy transition for some, but when it is said and done you are just that much more courageous than those who don't even try to step out. It also makes you a little bit more special than other women- you know, the ones who try to look like everybody else. Also, like I said in question 2, if somebody is going to love you, you should give them the chance to fall for you in your real state- the natural one.

Well said Anali! What do you think about this post? It is encouraging and helpful to you?
